Driving from Swellendam along the Garden Route to Plettenberg Bay, just over 300km along the N2 with some amazing stops along the way.
As a Namibian born and bred, ‘road tripping’ is in my blood.
A few of my favourite stops include La Bella Deli & Restaurant just outside Riversdale, 85km from Swellendam, a wonderful ‘pit stop’ for coffee and a bite to eat if needed. They have a fresh extensive selection of lovely cheeses and cold meats along with baked goods. It has a beautiful interior with a creative variety of gifts.
If you’ve just left Swellendam, obviously after spending the night at Aan de Oever Guest House and having just enjoyed our amazing breakfast, you might want to wait for Albertinia, just 40km on from Riversdale where The Garden Route Game Lodge is a must stop for a short break and a coffee! If you are ready for Lunch, this is the place. They are more than accommodating, with spectacular views from the lodge deck where you might even see two elephants and some smaller game grazing.
After Albertinia, Mossel Bay, Pinnacle Point Estate, is your next destination, a mere 45km on route. Aan de Zee @ Pinnacle Point Estate are Aan de Leisure Collections two Self – Catering Villa’s, they sleep up to ten people sharing and if you’re a golf enthusiast or simply a family or couple traveling and wanting to spend an evening or two just outside the hustle and bustle of Mossel Bay, but still close enough to go for lunch, dinner or to spend the day on the most amazing beaches, this is a fantastic stop over. Pinnacle Point Estate boasts one of the country’s most beautiful golf courses and has a clubhouse right on the cliffs above the renowned archaeological site with early evidence for modern human behaviour is situated. They have beautiful views over the ocean and server breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Plettenberg Bay is roughly 144km from Mossel Bay taking you past George, then through Wilderness, another great place to stop with miles and miles of white sandy beaches, paragliding and paddling. Sedgefield is next and then on through Knysna driving through some of the most beautiful forests in the country, finally reaching Plettenberg Bay.
All along this route, there are short drives to the coast, visiting places like Victoria Bay and Brenton-on-Sea, an absolute favourite.
Small game reserves, national parks and adventure villages scatter this entire route.
It’s a journey not to be missed.
