Swellendam Trails is free to access. There are different routes that each offer a vast variety of difficulty, distances, elevation and a lot of fun. Ideal for mountain biking and trail running. Here are some of the popular routes: 33km – 870m climb; 21km – 475m climb; 10km – 236m climb; 5km – 143m climb.

You should also try Marloth Nature Reserve.  The reserve has a variety of hiking trails to enjoy such as Duiwelsbos (2km/250m climb), Koloniesbos (2km/150m climb), The Plaat (9km/528m climb), Wamakersbos (10.5km/720m climb), Twaalfuurkop (12km/1200m climb) and Tienuurkop (8km/1000m climb). Grab your permit at the Marloth Main Office.

Swellendam is rich in Historic Buildings and Heritage. The Drosdty is one of the oldest buildings in South Africa and a great experience for young and old. A visit to the Drostdy would not be complete without a visit to the Gaol, Ambagswerf, Mayville house and Mayville Garden all located in the same area. Be sure not to miss our beautiful church. Today Swellendam’s Dutch Reformed church is an impressive building that has been famed to be the most photographed church in South Africa.

Situated in the picturesque Hermitage Valley, with panoramic views of the Langeberg Mountains and berry orchards, Wildebraam Berry Estate will delight you. While visiting you can learn about the intricacies of liqueur making and berry farming. Their private cellar produces a range of delicious liqueurs. Their farm kitchen produces an array of berry and fruit jams, dessert syrups, chutneys, relishes, pickles and gifts.

The Berry Farm is also situated in the lovely Hermitage Valley. With activities ranging from berry picking, tractor rides, zipline, water activities and even an enchanted forest, the berry farm caters for every need. Something to do for young and old.

From November to January visitors can enjoy picking their own youngberries and blackberries.

WATER ADVENTURES & CRUISES

For those who prefer a bit of action, Felix Unite is a river adventure company situated on the Breede River offering fun river rafting adventure trips for the whole family. The activity has been carefully curated and is guided by experienced and well-informed Breede River locals.

The Buffeljags Dam is an exquisite location for a scenic sundowner cruise on the Umshanti double decker barge. The barge parks in a gorge where you can braai, take a canoe trip to the waterfall, hike up the mountain, swim or just relax.

Swellendam is perfectly located and ideally situated to take a few day trips to surrounding areas. We would recommend the following:

Take a day trip to the beautiful De Hoop Nature Reserve. Activities are diverse and guests can choose between various day walks through the rich fynbos plains or along the deserted coastline, mountain biking or scenic game drives. Lazing on the beach and snorkeling in the many turquoise rock pools. Their restaurant is open daily.

Visit some surrounding wine farms. Drop by for unique wine and tasting experiences our local wineries has to offer. From Barrydale, Malgas, Bonnievale & Robertson – you won’t be disappointed.

Head out to Witsand or Hermanus during whale season. Between August to October you wouldn’t want to miss these magnificent creatures.
