Swellendam, a No. 1 Destination When Visiting South Africa – Part Two

Swellendam, a No. 1 Destination When Visiting South Africa!

THE CAPE OVERBERG, WESTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA, Part Two

I left off in part one, with the trending term, “Swellendam Has It All”.  I mentioned before, that over the years, casual visitors have returned to settle. Some overseas tourists have bought a house here and spend ½ the year here, the other ½  in Europe;  we call them our “swallows” Swellendam residents have so many stories to tell, about ordinary people, who have achieved amazing things in their lives , and special events that are now an historical aspect of the town. I know this applies to many other places , but I am not talking of other places, just this one!

Many of our international visitors say that they wish they could have stayed longer and will do so on another visit, and often we have the pleasure of seeing them again.

You don’t have to be the adventurous type to enjoy this town. There are wonderful activities to take part in, architectural and historical sites to visit.  It is where people find some peace and quiet and nature lovers or artists can pursue their calling. It is a photographers dream!

On Saturday mornings, when the mist is still low, individuals and small groups, gather near the Marloth Nature Reserve gate to start the early morning Parkrun, an activity that’s grown from one event in Bushy Park, London, 2004, to a global movement, with millions of people walking, jogging, running and organising, across twenty one countries, a wonderful start to the weekend. The course is a 5km timed run, it’s just you against the clock!

Weather permitting on Saturdays, under ancient oaks, a farmers market sets up stalls to greet the smiling faces of friends and families, all keen shoppers, coming to enjoy the sunshine and the opportunity to support our local farmers and artisans and the wonderful fresh produce on offer.  The markets are very popular and where the community comes together in many different ways.

Swellendam is the centre for short outings to nearby attractions; for example, pop out to “Spanspeck se Plek, just ½ hour away, for a great farm breakfast or a fat, delicious slice of homemade cake and coffee, You surely won’t walk away without purchasing a bag of fresh figs, date balls or an apron for that friend who definitely needs a new one!  Feel like a privileged local and fill your bottle with fresh spring water off the mountain, in the Tradouw Pass, on the way to Barrydale  an interesting village with wonderful people.

So the list goes on, Kwetu Guest Farm in Buffeljags village, with a large variety of herbivores, Donovan Julius an upcoming local artist with his studio in Suurbraak, De Hoop Nature Reserve, Struisbaai, the Robertson Wine Route, , …
